Acadian Odyssey Commission – Commemoration of the Acadian Deportation

The project of international commemoration of the Acadian Deportation covers the period from 1755 until the beginning of the 19th century. Its progress is categorized into four stages: embarkation (in Acadia), disembarkation (in the United States and in Europe), transit / migrations (in Acadia, in Europe, in the United States and in the West Indies) and recolonization of Acadia (in Atlantic Canada, Louisiana, Quebec and France).

The Acadian Deportation was a tragic event. The international commemoration project for the Acadian Deportation allows the Acadian people to assert themselves and to promote themselves as a model of a community that has shown perseverance.

Since 2005, a total of 16 monuments have been erected, including 5 in New Brunswick, 3 in Nova Scotia, 1 in Prince Edward Island, 1 in Newfoundland and Labrador, 4 in Quebec, 1 in Louisiana and 1 in Île de Miquelon (France). Each monument includes a general text in French and English that relates to Acadian Deportation as well as a bilingual text specific to the site that hosts a monument.

Acadian Odyssey Commission 💙🤍💛❤️

In 1999, the Acadian Odyssey Commission was created and developed with the goal of highlighting, in a tangible and permanent way, the Odyssey of the Acadian people in Canada, on the North American continent and across the globe. 🌎

According to its mandate, the Acadian Odyssey Commission ensures:
➡️ The international commemoration of the Acadian Deportation and the Acadian Odyssey;
➡️ Awareness of Acadian history and culture, and;
➡️ The promotion of Acadie as part of this project.

Since 2009, the Acadian Odyssey Commission has completed its mandate by accepting, thanks to the expertise of its members, to carry out requests relating to Acadian heritage and any question relating to the recognition of characters, events, and sites of historical importance. As such, it encourages and supports the creation of commemorative monuments.

Quai Mathieu 2

Le Quai Mathieu- The Heart of Acadian Chéticamp 💙🤍💛❤️

Le Quai Mathieu, which overlooks the Harbour of Chéticamp and Chéticamp Island, is centrally located in the downtown main street of this quaint Acadian Village. 📍
After the cod fisheries collapse in the early 1990’s, Chéticamp’s main economic foothold crumbled and residents became uncertain about their economic future. Thus, when conceptual plans were developed and displaced fisheries workers were asked to partake in the construction of the boardwalk, Le Quai Mathieu became a beacon of hope for revitalization.

The project received media attention, praising Chéticamp’s sense of community pride and the Chéticamp Development Commission which spearheaded the project. In 1994, the Chéticamp Development Commission had developed a phased plan for the boardwalk and other coastal infrastructure along its harbour. ⚓️

Although all phases have not yet been completed, the first primary phases were:
➡️ Phase 1: Boardwalk and parking lot in the town’s core.
➡️ Completed Phase 2: Boardwalk extension to “La Chaloupe’s” wharf.
➡️ Completed Phase 3: Boardwalk extension between “La Chaloupe” and “Harbour Restaurant”.
➡️ Completed Phase 4: Wharf Catwalk Construction.

Le Quai Mathieu and boardwalk has also been enhanced with the addition of gateway markers, branding, signage, and washrooms. The community has made good use of the infrastructure. 🙌🏻

It has served cultural purposes by hosting Acadian festival events, musical and dance evenings, it had become a whale watching venue for The Love Boat, and most recent local entrepreneurs have opened a kayak and seadoo rentals.

It is also been used as a physical activities spot for yoga, tai chi, walking or even just to sit and watch the sunset over Chéticamp Island. 🙌🏻

Elizabeth LeFort 2

Elizabeth LeFort – Rug Hooker from Cape Breton Island

Elizabeth LeFort was born in 1914, and lived her whole life in Chéticamp, Cape Breton Island – though her famous hooked rugs travelled the world.

She presented Eisenhower with his hooked portrait at The White House in 1957 and went on to do portraits of Pope Pius XII and Pope John XXIII, Jackie Kennedy, Queen Elizabeth, and Prince Charles, so her art has also graced the Vatican and Buckingham Palace.

In later years she hooked one rug with Prime Ministers of Canada, large portrayals of Canadian history, and Biblical scenes featuring hundreds of carefully hooked figures. Elizabeth LeFort, Chéticamp’s Master Rughooker, was given an Honorary Doctorate by the University of Moncton in 1975 and made a member of The Order of Canada in 1987.

Her work has been shown in Toronto, Montreal, St. John, Moncton, Sydney, San Diego, Phoenix, and other places.
